Monofocal lenses
These lenses correct your vision for one particular distance. They are commonly used within the NHS for cataract procedures and are easy for your eye to adapt to. Reading glasses may be required to supplement these lenses if you are over the age of 45, unless a monovision procedure is carried out. Your optometrist and surgeon will discuss this with you in more detail at your consultation.
Accomodating lenses
This type of lens is a common choice and is a more advanced form of intraocular lens treatment. This is because the lens is able to facilitate a slight change in shape, which aids your near vision and generally reduces the reliance on reading glasses, in comparison to a monofocal lens. An example of this lens is the Tetraflex® lens. The Tetraflex® IOL is new style of lens, designed to mimic your natural lens by moving subtly forward and back as you focus, and restoring your ability to "accommodate." You will not feel the lens move you'll just have useful near, mid, and far vision again without glasses or contact lenses.
The Tetraflex® Lens
- The Tetraflex® is placed in your eye in the ‘flat’ position, which is designed to give you clear distance vision.
- When you focus on a near object, The Tetraflex® is designed to use the natural forces in your eye (muscles) to move subtly forward, like your natural lens once did, giving you clear near vision.
- The Tetraflex® is designed to move subtly back and forth as you focus on distant, mid or near objects, allowing you to once again ‘accommodate’.
Multifocal lenses
For many who wear glasses or contact lenses the multifocal lens could mean independence from these. At Optical Express we use the ReZoom® multifocal lens and the TECNIS® multifocal lens. The multifocal lens not only treats presbyopia and cataracts, but it also turns back the clock to restore much of your ability to see up close, and at distance, in both bright light and low light situations. What makes the ReZoom® lens different are its features, making it a solution to consider if you have been diagnosed with cataracts and especially if you are long sighted.
The ReZoom® lens has uniquely proportioned visual zones that provide it with major advantages. Each ReZoom® multifocal lens is divided into five different light and focal distances. Unlike other earlier multifocal lens designs, the ReZoom® lens has proportioned the size of zones to provide for good vision in a range of light conditions. For instance, some zones have been designed to offer greater low light/distance vision and support during night driving.

The TECNIS® lens
One of the most important benefits of improved functional vision with the TECNIS® lens is safety. With compromised functional vision, even patients who have no problem reading the letters on an eye chart can be at a serious disadvantage in low-light situations because they have reduced contrast sensitivity.
The TECNIS® lens is the only lens with FDA-approved claims for improved functional vision and improved night-driving simulator performance. Good functional vision is especially important when driving at night. Based on night-driving simulator results in a controlled clinical study, the TECNIS® lens provided improved visibility that may allow for quicker reaction time, which is likely to provide a meaningful safety benefit to elderly drivers. The improvement in functional vision may also improve safety in other low-visibility situations.
In addition to receiving sharp distance vision with the TECNIS® lens, in many cases your surgeon can also correct pre-existing astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery. Ask your Surgeon if the TECNIS® lens can rejuvenate your vision.
